Welcome!

This website is a resource for tobacco cessation researchers and practitioners, and contains:

  • Findings from a research project on how intentions to quit lead to smoking cessation

  • Program materials from interventions to promote quit intentions and smoking cessation that you can view and download

The project was funded by the National Cancer Institute (1R01CA242746-01A1) and undertaken at UNC - Chapel Hill.

Background: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death. The U.S. Government aims to reduce the rate of current smoking from ~10% to 5% by 2030. This project contributes to that aim.

This project: (1) identified 172 behavioral interventions to promote quit intentions and smoking cessation that were tested in randomized controlled trials; (2) quantified the impact of changing quit intentions on smoking cessation; (3) collated the intervention materials used in those trials through correspondence with the original research teams; (4) coded the behavior change techniques used in interventions using an established taxonomy; (5) determined which behavior change techniques were effective in promoting quit intentions and smoking cessation.

How to use this website: Use the headings on the top right of this page to navigate to our findings, the bibliography of studies whose authors shared their program materials, and the behavior change techniques used in interventions. You can access intervention materials via the bibliography and for each behavior change technique.
